FiberMeFast powered by Geneseo Communications has been selected by the Village of Sheffield, to build a buried 100% fiber-to-the-premises network throughout the village.
Sheffield, IL. October 17th, 2024 –FiberMeFast powered by Geneseo Communications has been selected by the Village of Sheffield, to build a buried 100% fiber-to-the-premises network throughout the village.
FiberMeFast powered by Geneseo Communications Inc. (GCI), the area’s leading fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) provider, is excited to announce the expansion of its network to residents and businesses of Sheffield, Illinois. FiberMeFast will address this build in two separate phases with plans to invest more than $1 million in this multi-year fiber expansion project, marking what CEO Mike McClain noted is “a major milestone in bringing 10 Gigabit internet service to the Village of Sheffield, Illinois.”
The new project is expected to begin this year and continue into Spring of 2025. Once complete it will provide FTTP for all residents and businesses within Sheffield. “Sheffield village leaders made it clear they wanted the forefront of modern technology, with access to 10 Gigabit symmetrical high-speed fiber internet access for the residents and businesses of Sheffield. In lieu of more poles and lines cluttering the cities right-of-way, and to avoid weather related outages, GCI plans to bury its network. We are excited that Sheffield village leaders had the foresight to want the best for their community and have chosen to partner with GCI to deliver it,” said McClain. “We are grateful for the cooperation of the Village of Sheffield and look forward to continuing our work with village and community leaders to provide services that vastly surpass those of existing providers. A 10 Gigabit fiber network supports the village’s vision to become a leading-edge smart technology connected community, positioning Sheffield to realize even more growth by attracting new businesses and residents.”
“This announcement is a game-changer for the Village of Sheffield,” Village President Mary Lanham said. “FiberMeFast powered by GCI’s large investment in our village is an investment in a brighter future for our citizens. Members of the village board and I agree, having global connectivity through fiber-optic broadband is a requirement for all levels of business, including those residents that work from home. GCI’s expansion of high-capacity and reliable broadband postures Sheffield to attract even more businesses, and positions Sheffield well into the future for increased economic development opportunities. As our village continues to grow, it is vital that we are able to provide fast, reliable, and affordable fiber internet options. Access to ultra-high-speed internet has become as necessary as access to clean water and electricity. Our partnership with GCI will ensure that residents and businesses throughout Sheffield will have access to a network that supports their community’s continued growth as well as provides increased technological capabilities.” she said.
Designs are underway and construction is expected to begin this month. With the launch, FiberMeFast will offer fully symmetrical speeds up to 10 Gigabit per second with unlimited data use. Sheffield customers will have the option to add streaming TV service as well as have the bandwidth to power multiple devices including home automation technologies.
